    Quality Control Personnel

My six month industrial training experience at Crown Flour Mill helped me gain insight into the vital role quality control personnel play in the food industry. From quality assurance which is process oriented to quality control which is product oriented, the quality control personnel partake in every aspect. They oversee every stage of production from the raw material being brought in to the finished product taken out. They ensure that every raw material used in production is of the finest quality and conforms to the required standard, so as to yield products with high quality and longer shelf life. I also learnt importance of enforcing Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as well as Critical Control Point (CCP) at every stage of production and how important it is to the outcome of the final product. Another important aspect of the industrial training is being able to relate the theoretical part of your course of study with the industrial aspect. As a student of the microbiology department, I was able to relate the theoretical knowledge gained from school and how it can be applied in a food industry. I understood how important it is to carry out microbial analysis at every stage of production. I got to work with different materials like modified agar, EMB agar, which I did not have access to in school. Other things acquired during my six month industrial training include skills like communication skill, problem-solving skills, time management skills, adaptability skill as well as team work skill. Communication skill gained helped me learn how to interact with the people around me in the organization to foster a positive and conducive work environment. This skill also helped me learn how to pass out information and how to respond in certain situations. Problem-solving skill gained helped me develop the ability to brainstorm and come up with solutions quickly for any problem that arises no matter how impromptu it may be. I also gained time-management skills, from learning to be punctual to work at all times, to be able to complete certain given tasks within the duration of time allocated, or being able to complete several tasks within a short period of time. The ability to adapt to any new system that is put in place or adjust to new protocol or standard is another skill I acquired. In the food industry, systems are constantly adjusting, new regulations are being put in place. Periodically, standards are improving and lots of competitors keep arising so there is a constant need to improve, as the saying goes “change is inevitable”. Finally, I learnt how to work together with colleagues, as a team to complete tasks.
